A road in San Juan. A Minolta X-700. A moment that became a reminder to notice the life between our destinations.
Open audio directlyI was driving through San Juan, Puerto Rico, focused on reaching wherever I was going next, when this road made me stop.
It did not call to me with noise. It called through silence.
The road descended between the trees toward the distant hills. Light and shadow divided the landscape. For one clear moment, the scene seemed to say: do not spend your life moving from one destination to another without experiencing the road between them.
I pulled over and left the car running. Then everything slowed—the trees, the shadows, the distant mountains, even my own thoughts.
I lifted my Minolta X-700 and framed the scene on 35mm black-and-white film. Without color, what remained felt essential: light, contrast, texture, distance, and time.
Just as I pressed the shutter, a white car came around the corner.
That car completed the photograph. It represented all of us when we become so concerned with arriving that we stop seeing where we are.
The journey repeats itself, car after car, person after person. We pass through beautiful places while thinking only about what comes next.
This time, I chose to stop.
The photograph became my reminder: do not merely pass through the picture. Notice it. Enter it. Allow it to change you. Become part of the story.
The destination matters—but life is happening along the road.
Beauty is everywhere, but only when we slow down enough to see it.
